Key to the Bastille
BRASS
Size:
7" x 3-1/2"
Weighs 1.50 lbs
Second to the Liberty Bell in Philadelphia as a symbol of freedom, the Key to the Bastille was presented to George Washington by the Marquis de Lafayette in 1790 with the following poignant words...
"Give me leave,
my dear General, to present you with the main key to the Bastille...the fortress of despotism.
It is a tribute which I owe as a son to my adoptive father,as an aid de camp to my general, as a missionary of liberty to its patriarch."
The original Bastille key is made of iron and hangs in a glass case in the central hall of Mount Vernon, George Washington's plantation on the Potomac River.
As an executive gift, paperweight or decorative accessory, the Key to the Bastille is an historic piece hand cast in solid brass as a remembrance of those ideals that have made our country great.
Exclusively from Jefferson Brass.
