In Germany, Mother’s Day, or Muttertag, is celebrated on the second Sunday of May, unless it coincides with Pentecost, in which case it’s observed a week earlier. The day is marked by heartfelt gestures rather than grand displays. Children often present their mothers with handpicked wildflowers, homemade cards, and perhaps a simple breakfast in bed.

I fondly recall my siblings and me tiptoeing into the kitchen early in the morning, preparing breakfast, and picking lilacs from our garden to adorn the table. Our mother, always the first to rise, would be genuinely surprised and moved by our efforts. It was a day of genuine appreciation, free from commercial influences.
