Dieter Rausch and his“Fine European Wares with a Williamsburg Twist” What brings a German fellow, whose successful career as an architect and builder spanned 30 years in his native Germany, to Middleburg, Virginia? And, why would this German architect open a Christmas Shop, of all things? We’ll let Dieter explain: “Many years ago, the first of my many trips to the United States included an excursion to historic Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia. I was hooked! The exquisitely reproduced wares from the 18th century made of wood, brass, porcelain, textiles and glass reminded me of European wares of the same period and I felt an instant affinity for all things Williamsburg. And so, it seemed a marriage made in heaven. I would bring original, handmade treasures made in Europe today as they had been for hundreds of years, and highlight authentic Williamsburg reproductions as well, all depicting the beauty and artistry of the 18th century. The historic town of Middleburg (c1797) and its hunt country feeling was the perfect setting for my new venture, The Christmas Sleigh. I cherished the memories of the magical Christmases of my childhood in Germany, and I wanted to share these wonderful memories of Christmas seasons past, to bring to this country the feeling of being seeped in tradition and history, through the exquisite handmade Christmas treasures that have been crafted in my native Germany for the past 200 years.” |
