These carolers are a long time personal favorite of mine! I started collecting these absolutely darling Byers� Choice Carolers in 1979 when my mother presented me with a darling caroling couple as a Christmas gift. I had never heard of them, but their classic and nostalgic appeal spoke to me. My rather extensive collection has certainly grown over the years and they now grace our huntboards, our sideboards and our mantles and threaten to take over our upstairs as well! One can absolutely never have too many Byers� Choice Carolers. Every time I think enough is enough, they come out with absolutely irresistible new ones � and it begins again. Byers� Choice carolers seem to appeal to all, young and old. My children have started their own collections in their own homes and have begun the tradition of adding to their growing collections each year with their children. What a wonderful family tradition! |
For those of you unfamiliar with the Byers� family story, here is a short overview. It is a remarkable American story of talent, ingenuity, hard work, attention to detail, and respect for quality.
Joyce Byers began making carolers on her Dining Room Table in the late 1960s. Like many of us, she was not thrilled with commercial Christmas decorations available in the stores at the time. At the risk of dating myself, I, too, remember those silver artificial trees with blue lights! I believe she was a classicist at heart. She decided to make her own creations more reflective of her image of Christmas. She took scraps of plaid and bits of fur and created carolers that reminded her of the joys of Christmas. At first, they were only used as family decorations. She made some as presents. Encouraged by others, she began to sell locally in a shop that was a part of the federation of Women�s Exchanges. Sales grew and grew. Before long, the kitchen and dining room tables were not adequate and a family business was born. We are forever grateful that it was!
Today, the entire family now oversees a team of 180 artisans in Pennsylvania who handcraft those same creations that started out on the family Dining Room Table many years ago. Sold the world over, the company still holds to its firm roots: they produce a quality product, at an affordable price, and they are dedicated to serving their customers and the community as a whole in the spirit of Christmas.
